ENGL 100

Activity

Please complete the following two activities:

1. Keyword Brainstorm

Please write out your answers to Step 1 and Step 2 in an email. You will be sending this to Jocelyn.

In this activity, please use the following practice topic:

"I am angry at the university for the way they handled the death of Queen Elizabeth. There was a national day of mourning and classes were cancelled, but the university did not acknowledge the impact that the monarchy has had on Indigenous people worldwide, and especially in Canada. I am angry that there was no public support for holding the monarchy accountable for their role in colonialism. I would like to create a care package to send to the university to educate them about how they might have better supported people in our community whose families were harmed during the Queen's reign."

You need to follow 2 steps.

Step 1:

In bullet form, brainstorm 2-3 things that you would like to tell the university in order to help them see and understand this perspective.

(note: there is no right or wrong answer. The purpose is to practice going through the process. Try to think of just one or two things you would want to tell them, rather than trying to solve all of their problems!)

Step 2:

Brainstorm a list of at least 10 keywords that you could use in your library search in order to find information that supports what you want to tell this person.

2. Discovery Search

In this part, you will be emailing Jocelyn a screenshot.

Please use the library's Discovery search to look for academic journals on this topic. You will need to put the keywords you brainstormed in question 1 into the Discovery search in a way that will bring back results, so make sure you put different keywords on different search lines if needed. Once you have a search that you feel had some good results, take a screenshot of your search boxes so I can see what keywords you used and how you entered them into the system.

This is an example of the part of the screen I want to see:

3. Send

Use your Capilano University email address to email the answers to question 1 and your screenshot to jocelynhallman@capilanou.ca. If you cannot use your Capilano University email address, send it from another address but ensure that you sign it with your full name so that you receive credit for the activity.
