Physical Media to Streaming (Digitization) Service

Sometimes, there may be instances when you require a streaming version of a DVD or Blu-ray in our collection. For instance, you are teaching an online class, and you need to play a DVD/Blu-ray over conferencing platforms such as Teams, Zoom, or Webex, but the DVD/Blu-ray is not playing well. Or, there may be a legal limitation on playing a DVD/Blu-ray over conferencing platforms.

If you require a streaming version of a DVD/Blu-ray in the library's collection, the library may convert it to a streaming file for use in courses, but only if specific conditions are met.  Once the film has been converted, we will provide you with a link to give to your students so that they can watch the film. The link will require them to login with their usual Cap U login, and will expire at the end of term.

If you think your request qualifies, contact the Media Technician with the following information:

  • DVD/Blu-ray/VHS title
  • DVD/Blu-ray/VHS owner – you, the Library, your department, etc.
  • Date(s) needed
  • Course(s) you intend to use it for

Please note that two weeks’ notice may be required to provide this service when the DVD/Blu-ray/VHS is in hand. For conversion requests that require a DVD/Blu-ray to be purchased, timing will depend on how quickly we can order and receive the film.

Additionally, please note that due the limitation of our technology for digitizing Blu-rays, the product of digitization of Blu-rays will be in SD (Standard Definition) and there will be a black border around the picture.
