What is Peer-Review?

Scholarly articles are known by many names including:

  • Scholarly, peer-reviewed articles
  • Academic articles
  • Peer-reviewed journal articles

Whatever you call them, they share these common features:

  • Written by academics (people with advanced degrees like PhDs)
  • Published in academic journals
  • Peer-reviewed

Watch the following video by NC State University Libraries for a quick explanation of how journal articles go through peer-review.
