When the logo for the Rio Olympics was revealed, accusations of plagiarism were levelled against Tatil, the Brazilian company that designed the image. Tatil's Director denied that the logo was a copy of the Telluride Foundation logo (designed in 2000).
"Gelli acknowledged a “similarity” with the foundation’s logo, but said the broad concept of people embracing each other is not novel."
"Rio 2016 logo creators deny plagiarism", The Star, Jan 2, 2011
What do you think? Is the Rio 2016 Olympic logo different enough from the Telluride Foundation's to be considered a new and original work, or is it copyright infringement?
The Rio logo was also accused of being too close to the Matisse painting, Dance.
“The brand is radically different because it is tridimensional,” Gelli said. “It’s a radical difference.”
Do you agree? Is the Rio 2016 logo "radically different" from the Matisse painting? What about the Telluride Foundation logo - is it different enough to escape accusations of plagiarism regarding the Matisse painting?
What about the next logo, from the 2004 Carnaval celebrations in Salvador, capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia?
