Contract Grading, otherwise known as Labour Based grading (Inoue, 2022), can sometimes be mistaken for a type of pass/fail or mastery grading. While there are some similarities, the difference is that contract grading enables students to communicate their goals and earn credit for the work they complete; whereas pass/fail is more of a way to directly assess assigned work. There is also extensive evidence that contract grading can be instrumental in creating a more equitable and accessible learning environment for marginalized and underprivileged students (Kryger & Zimmerman, 2020).
