8 ½ is a film that examines the trials and tribulations of Guido Anselmi, a narcissistic film director struggling with writer’s block. Fellini portrays Guido as a person with lofty ambitions and available resources, but one who cannot seem to make his fleeting thoughts tangible or realized. And through this conflict, the audience is shown not only the extravagant lifestyle led by Guido and those around him, but surreal interpretations of their thoughts, fantasies, and memories. With Fellini’s ability to portray the most mundane state of being as one of unfathomable magnitude, 8 ½ feels like a true ode to the idea of artistic vision as a whole.
