How Can I Use Books and Media?

Books

For your Economics assignments, you may need to use books for background research or to support your ideas and analyses. Remember that you may not always need to read the entire book - sometimes, just one or two chapters will give you all the information you need.

eBooks

eBooks are exactly the same as hard copy books in terms of content, but the difference is you can access them online! If you do a catalogue search in the box below or from the Library's Website, your results will automatically include eBooks. The Library has many more eBooks than print.

Streaming Platforms and DVDs

The CapU Library also has many DVDs and subscribes to a number of streaming platforms that include documentaries, some of which relate to economics. When you search the CapU Library catalogue using the box below, or from the main Library Website, you will automatically get DVDs and streaming films in your search results. Films can give you great information for your assignments, but always check with your instructor before using them as an official source.

Streaming Platforms for Movies and Documentaries

Can-Core
Canadian streaming educational and documentary film collection; includes Indigenous and BC content.

Kanopy
Kanopy provides access to a unique collection of feature films, documentaries, training films, and theatrical releases, including award winners. Streaming titles available with Kanopy include films from the Criterion Collection, Kino Lorber, New Day Films, Media Education Foundation, and more.
System requirements for streaming is an up to date web browser and a good internet connection. For full details on supported browsers please see this page from Kanopy help.

Kanopy is a "lease-on-demand" service for students and faculty. If you have questions about Kanopy, contact the library.
NFB.ca
Access to NFB films online, including documentaries, animation and alternative dramas. The National Film Board CAMPUS service provides access to more than 3,500 Canadian films, including films freely viewable from the NFB site and access to films not available on the public website.
Streaming note: if sharing an NFB film during a live-streamed class, we recommend using Chrome, Edge, or Firefox as the browser, and Zoom as the meeting app. Teams will not work.
Criterion-on-Demand
Criterion-on-Demand allows subscribers to screen films for educational purposes. With more than 4000 English-language feature films, the library is large and extensive. Titles are available to stream.
Streaming not working? Try Chrome or Firefox. If traffic volume is very high you might see a "Server Busy" message. To resolve this, click "Try Again" or refresh the page. If neither of those work, you may have to try later.

Please note that films are not viewable on cell phones, tablets, or game consoles. A PC/laptop is required.
